Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Temiskaming Shores District Curriculum

The high school math curriculum requires that students are prepared to solve complex math problems. During grades 9 and 10, students will either take Principles of Mathematics (Academic) or Foundations of Mathematics (Applied). Both courses introduce the same topics of Linear Relations, Number Sense and Algebra, and Measurement and Geometry, and the Academic course also introduces Analytic Geometry. Each topic sequentially follows from what students learned during eighth grade.

The high school science curriculum focuses on Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Space Science, and Physics. Students can choose between an Academic or Applied Track depending on their post-secondary goals. The topics studied in ninth grade include sustainable ecosystems, atoms, elements, and compounds, the study of the universe and space exploration, and characteristics of electricity. In tenth grade, students learn about living systems, chemical reactions, climate change, and light and geometric optics.

Chalk Talk: Why Teachers Use Different Instructional Approaches

Teachers have a number of options when they teach a lesson about how they will go about instructing students in the topic. The range of approaches are well-suited to different subjects and topics, and so teachers are able to pull from their toolkit and design an approach that will take into consideration learning styles and intended teaching outcomes. Different approaches can be more or less effective for individual students, which is a balance that must be found for individual students as well as whole classes.
