Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Temple Terrace District Curriculum

As a result of its candidacy as an International Baccalaureate World School, Riverhills offers a comprehensive program of inquiry, inquiry-based learning centers, arts and humanities programs, world languages, and service learning. Students who are involved in this program gain understanding and respect for other cultures and, hence, can help create a better world. They are also expected to develop as whole children through a transdisciplinary curriculum and become compassionate lifelong learners.

The Language Arts curriculum has been designed to support all learning that students do. Reading, writing, and discussion skills are developed for both literary and non-fiction works. Students gain skills that help them move conversations along in a meaningful manner as well, including asking appropriate questions and soliciting conversation partners for additional details. Appropriately acknowledging the contributions of other speakers and promoting the development of active listening skills are also emphasized.

Chalk Talk: Student Wellness

An important aspect of students and their performance in school is their health and wellness. Students who are not well-fed, not getting enough sleep, and are not engaging in proper personal hygiene are going to have difficulty concentrating and doing well academically. Schools have an obligation to provide free breakfast and lunch to eligible students based on their family’s income. Parents should make sure that students eat a nutritious breakfast before coming to school so that they have the necessary energy to start the day; this is especially important for teens, who may be tempted to skip early breakfasts. Parents should also pack healthy lunches for their kids or make sure that they are choosing nutritious items if buying lunch at school. Schools should provide healthy lunch items to students. It is also vital that students get the sleep they need—at least eight hours—to be be actively engaged in school. Wellness also involves students’ mental and emotional needs.
