Educating Our Parents: Understanding the The Dalles District Curriculum

The Reading curriculum begins with the basics of learning about the formation and sounds of letters. Then they learn how these letters form words and then sentences. The students soon become fluent readers that can understand authors’ viewpoints and how to read factual information. When they graduate from high school, these students have the tools to appreciate literature.

The field of geography is covered under the Social Studies curriculum. This study begins with the students becoming familiar with their immediate surroundings, such as their classrooms, their homes and their bedrooms. Once they are familiar with taking an image of an area and setting it on paper, they begin to learn about directions, latitude and longitude. Within all of this the students begin to understand this knowledge and how their town, state and country are laid out. This knowledge helps them to understand about the world.
