Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Thibodaux District Curriculum

The LaFourche Parish Public School System is gradually phasing in the state mandated Common Core Curriculum in all of the systems schools. The state school board of Louisiana recently delayed the implementation of all of Common Core’s educational standards for two years with full implementation taking place by the end of 2015. Common Core focuses on providing students with a clear set of expectations for students particularly in core subjects.

In English and Language Arts, students focus on learning the English language through speaking, listening, reading and writing. Students learn to read for evidence and to increase their vocabulary through progressively more difficult text and to develop critical analysis skills. Reading material includes both great literature and informational text so that students become comfortable with the types of reading they may encounter in college and on the job.
