Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Thief River Falls District Curriculum
The middle school life science curriculum in Thief River Falls gives students insight into human interactions with other living systems. Students learn about fungi, bacteria, viruses, and parasites, and how each can infect the human body and cause it to function abnormally. Learners explore various means by which they can learn about political issues and the stance that various candidates take on those issues. Developing the ability to recognize bias in political information is a point of emphasis as well. There is also an exploration of constitutional freedoms. Chalk Talk: Students Need Public Speaking Skills
While speaking in front of a crowd isn’t everyone’s favorite activity, it is nonetheless an important skill for students to develop. Having the ability to speak to a crowd increases students’ confidence, and not just in their communication abilities. Strong public speakers tend to be more self-confident and have a positive opinion of themselves in general. Likewise, having the ability to speak in public gives students improved interpersonal communication skills as well. Public speakers know how to read people and respond to their feelings and emotions in an effective manner. They are likely to also develop leadership skills as their public speaking skills grow. People that can speak effectively are also more comfortable around others, making for improved relationships with classmates, teachers, and members of the community.
