Tillsonburg District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The core academic curriculum used in the local districts is organized around standards for learning that students need to meet each year in order to be proficient in the subject and prepared for the next year. In English, the development of abilities in reading, writing, speaking and listening, and understanding media are the major strands in the curriculum from kindergarten through secondary school. The overarching objective is that students are able to communicate, make connections, recognize different points of view, appreciate the personal and cultural learning from texts, and to be able to use the language effectively.

We currently cover the following Tillsonburg-area school districts: London District Catholic School Board and Thames Valley District School Board.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Tillsonburg District Curriculum

In Science, the curriculum specifies content standards in life science, earth and space science, chemistry and physics, the environment, and technology. Students are expected to develop the skills of scientific thinking and processes to determine validity of hypotheses and theories. With these academic skills as a foundation, students will have the basis with which they can pursue any area of learning which they choose.

In Math, students are instructed in numerical operations, shapes and spatial relationships, measurement, algebraic operations, data analysis, and mathematical literacy. The outcomes for students' math education are that they will be able to solve problems and use appropriate computational methods, reason and reflect, attend to accuracy, represent quantitative data and communicate mathematical understandings.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Peer Learning

In class, students will have many opportunities to learn from each other. There are collaborative projects, group work, and peer conferencing opportunities. These can be daunting for many students for reasons of academic confidence, belief in the value of their feedback, and feeling shy about one owns' work. However, the opportunity allows students to get past these reasonable fears and see how their peers actually value their work. Indeed, it can be a major boost to self-esteem to get positive feedback from peers, and when students are asked to work in groups, teachers will usually specify positive ways of giving feedback to be used during the experience.
