Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Timberwood Park District Curriculum

Mathematics is a part of the curriculum at Comal Independent School District. Students begin to learn how to manipulate numbers in elementary by learning the foundations of equations, including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. After learning how to succeed in this, they then increase the difficulty by adding complicated shapes, algebraic formulas and other skills to their math tool boxes. They can then pull each sill out when it is needed in whatever area of life they may live.

Comal Independent School District include various areas of science in their curriculum, including biology, chemistry, physics and ecology. Each of these sciences allow students to look at the world from different perspectives. From the elementary years through high school, each student learns about cycles of life, water, rocks, stars and more. They begin by looking at each object from a general perspective and then they begin to look closer. Sometimes this includes dissection, or the use of microscopes and other times this includes lab or field work.

Chalk Talk: Astronomy

Astronomy is a part of each child's science curriculum. Some children take to the subject easily, while other do not. To help a child create an interest in, and succeed, in this area, parents can take a part in his area of education. This does not mean parents need to be experts, but when outside at night they can look up and begin a conversation with the child. By seeing what areas of astronomy excite the child, the parent can help lead them along. They can ask if the child can point out the Northern Star, of if they can share what phase the moon is in and what phase happens next. Parents can also talk about how the light from the stars that are being seen traveled light years. By opening up these areas of interest, a parent may be opening a new enthusiasm for the child.
