Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Tipp City District Curriculum

The math curriculum in Tipp City begins in kindergarten, where children become familiarized with basic mathematical concepts. Children learn number names and their sequence, and acquire an understanding of counting and cardinality. Learners are introduced to quantity, and develop the ability to compare numbers by counting objects. Addition and subtraction are introduced as well. Basic measurement and data processes are introduced as well. Children learn how to describe measurable attributes of an object, and how to classify objects based on those attributes.

As part of the district’s science curriculum, high school students have the opportunity to study physical geology. Students examine minerals in depth and learn about atoms and elements, as well as the types of chemical bonds present in various minerals. Students look at crystalline structures, and hardness, cleavage, fluorescence, and other mineral properties. Learners also analyze various forms of rocks. Students examine igneous rocks to determine if they are mafic or felsic in nature.

Chalk Talk: Visual and Performing Arts Learning

The visual and performing arts curriculum helps students to understand and interpret art as well as develop their own creative talents. Students learn how to brainstorm, engage in thoughtful planning, and collaborate with others to develop and implement project ideas. Interpretation of art is another critical aspect of the visual arts curriculum. Students explore various genres of art, identifying common themes and methods, while also speculating on the artist’s intent. On the performance side, students learn how to construct scenes, design and create costumes, and devise lighting strategies and special effects. To gain an appreciation for theatre as an art form, students also examine theatrical works from around the world and from various historical periods. Students explore various genres as well, including tragedies and comedies.
