Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Tomah District Curriculum
The English language arts curriculum in Tomah is based on the Common Core State Standards. As part of the curriculum, elementary school students participate in activities that promote proficiency in reading informational texts. Students learn how to integrate various sources of information, including text, pictures, maps, and graphs. Learners also work on identifying how authors present information. Analysis of how authors support their positions with evidence is undertaken as well. Students develop a working understanding of bias by examining two texts on the same subject.
Tomah’s middle school nutrition science strand helps students develop the skills necessary to make good food decisions. Students explore the role and influence of the media with regard to what people eat and how much they eat. Learners engage in an examination of their own eating habits and propose changes that can make these habits healthier. The consequences of eating too much or too little food are explored as well. Learners evaluate nutritional information provided on food packaging, learning how to determine if the food is a healthy choice or not.

Chalk Talk: Advantages of E-Textbooks
As more and more schools adopt electronic textbooks, students, teachers, and parents are finding there are many advantages to doing so. For students, having e-textbooks means they no longer have to carry around a backpack full of heavy traditional books. Instead, they can carry a laptop or tablet and easily access their readings and course materials. For teachers, e-textbooks are advantageous because they no longer have to keep track of lost or damaged books. This proves to be beneficial to school districts as well, because they no longer have to worry about replacing those textbooks. For parents, e-textbooks mean no more listening to excuses for not doing homework because textbooks were left at school. Since e-textbooks are accessible online, students can get their homework done, even if they forget their “book” at school.
