Chalk Talk: Helping Students with Disabilities with Homework

Homework that is assigned by teachers serve different purposes such as to give additional learning time, build study and organizational skills, and to help keep parents informed. Students that have disabilities may see it as a waste of time. Parents can help overcome this. First lines of communication need to be open between the parent and the teacher to make sure that assignments are clear and not too lengthy. Next, ask what the policies are for late, or missing work and if there are any adaptations available. At home parents can set up a homework area that is separated from distractions and is set up with the materials that may be needed. Finally, check a homework journal to make sure that all assignments have been completed and that the child knows where it is so they can make sure to turn it in. Helping a child with their work only takes a little bit of time, but can prove to be helpful to all involved.
