Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Tonawanda District Curriculum

In English and Language Arts, the focus is on developing reading, writing, speaking and listening skills that demonstrate a command of the English language. Students learn research, critical analysis skills, and learn to relate their reading to their own lives and to the world at large. Strategies for decoding the meaning of words and texts are emphasized throughout the discussion and the teaching process so that students have models from which to develop their understanding.

In Math, at the elementary school grades, the district has adopted the Go Math! Textbook series to help bring students up to the required Common Core Math curriculum standards. The Go Math! Series provides teachers with quick student assessments, and access to online interactive tools. Students learn the basic computational skills in addition to beginning algebra, and geometry. Students then continue with the study of algebra and geometry and add statistics and probability into their learning.

Visiting the zoo is fun but it can be expensive and time consuming. Now children can visit the National Zoological Park at the Smithsonian via their computers for a virtual visit. The live animal cams at the National Zoological Park website allow children to check in on animals on a regular basis and really see them in their habitat for an extended period of time. There are more than 2,000 individual animals at the zoo and many can be viewed through animal cams including the Andean bear cubs, the Asian otters, cheetahs, clouded leopards, fishing cats, flamingos, golden lion tamarins, and gorillas.
