Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Tonawanda District Curriculum
In English and Language Arts, the focus is on developing reading, writing, speaking and listening skills that demonstrate a command of the English language. Students learn research, critical analysis skills, and learn to relate their reading to their own lives and to the world at large. Strategies for decoding the meaning of words and texts are emphasized throughout the discussion and the teaching process so that students have models from which to develop their understanding.
In Math, at the elementary school grades, the district has adopted the Go Math! Textbook series to help bring students up to the required Common Core Math curriculum standards. The Go Math! Series provides teachers with quick student assessments, and access to online interactive tools. Students learn the basic computational skills in addition to beginning algebra, and geometry.
