Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Topeka District Curriculum

Topeka Public Schools have adopted a strategic curriculum based around major principles of learning. Goals include the use of sensory input to process information and define meaning, learning to link ideas to form a broader understanding, and implementing a wide range of language forms such as symbols and images.

In addition, students should learn the importance of context in understanding a topic. Communication should be viewed as the basis of learning and as influenced by ideas and the development of independent motivation in the student to learn more should be sought. Students should be challenged with rigorous and life-applicable lesson plans.

These principles were developed by Dr. Steve Burkholder and a team of educators who spent months working on this method of learning. It was approved by the Board of Education in April, 2010. Our tutors understand these principles and will guide your child in the correct and timely implementation of these standards.

Topeka District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The Topeka Public Schools use the Kansas College and Career Ready Standards as the curricular guidelines for all core academic subjects. The framework for each subject is designed to teach students the fundamentals during elementary school, then begin to progress them into more analytic work during middle school. In high school, students will have both stages of learning to reflect upon which is crucial to the development of critical thinking skills and enables students to use their abilities to reach their academic goals. Students will also have greater independence in high school including opportunities to take college level courses of design an Independent Study.

We currently cover the following Topeka-area school districts: Topeka Public Schools.

Keeping Informed: Recent Topeka Educational News

  • Skipping Rope For Healthy Hearts - Students at Meadows Elementary School were skipping rope last Friday, November 16, 2012, for a good cause: to raise money and awareness for healthy hearts. The proceeds of their jumping session - which lasted an hour - went to the American Heart Association. They kept their own hearts healthy with this great form of exercise, which combines cardio and coordination, and raised over $500 for the AHA.
  • Board of Education Honors Topeka Public School Psychologists - The importance of students having access to a professional and trained psychologist was reaffirmed recently when the Board of Education honored a number of Topeka Public Schools psychologists with the Possibilities In Action Award. The meaning of these awards is hard to overestimate; in short, though, it means that the school psychologists did an exceptional job in guiding the students as they navigated through the educational community and learned the importance of community support when it comes to learning.
  • Topeka Public School Police Force Moves Into New Home - In a move that is a tremendous resource to the community of Topeka Public Schools, the campus police have moved their headquarters to a new building. They will have new and improved resources and equipment. The stability this will bring to the community is a win for all parties involved: students, teachers, neighbors, and police officers.

Chalk Talk: The Importance Of Home Study

In this age of information, students are constantly bombarded with a variety of stimuli: music, television, the internet, movies... it is easy to become distracted. That is why it's so important for parents to take an active role in their child's education, in particular the time they spend studying at home. The school day is only so long and a teacher can only give a limited amount of attention to each student. For a student to blossom academically, studying outside of school is vital. Hiring a Topeka-area tutor is the most effective method of accomplishing this, as it is one-on-one and tailored to support the student where he or she needs help.
