Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Totowa District Curriculum
The primary force behind curriculum development is the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. These research-based standards establish benchmarks for student learning in science, technology, visual and performing arts, health and physical education, 21st Century life and careers, world languages and social studies. Math and language arts coursework are developed according to the guidelines established by the Common Core State Standards.
The Common Core State Standards provide for a comprehensive study in proper writing techniques. In elementary school, students learn about grammar, spelling, punctuation and other foundational writing skills. They also learn how to organize their writing in a coherent fashion. In middle school, students expand on these foundational skills by learning how to write according to specific genres, such as persuasive, expository and narrative pieces. High school students expand their knowledge even further by acquiring effective research skills. Students learn how to collate information from numerous sources into a cohesive document that provides insight.
