Townsend District and Curriculum

North Middlesex Regional School District encompasses the towns of Pepperell, Townsend, and Ashby. The district is home to an early childhood center and is working on getting a new high school built. North Middlesex Regional School District uses the Common Core Standards. The literacy standards are incorporated across all content areas and involve reading more complex texts, writing that prepares students for college, and applying ideas. In 2015, the MCAS state standardized assessment will be replaced by PARCC, which better measures students’ college- and career-readiness and aligns to Common Core.

We currently cover the following Townsend-area school district: North Middlesex Regional School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Townsend District Curriculum

The district has three Strategic Goals for Curriculum and Instruction. The first of these goals is to continually review and revise the curriculum based on students’ achievement of the standards as well as providing teachers with the academic supports and professional development they need. Next, the curriculum should allow students to apply the skills they learn in school in the real world—both in school and in the community. The final goal is to offer learning opportunities that students want to connect with.

The district emphasizes the importance of high-quality, ongoing professional development for teachers. The district aims to provide teachers with high-quality training in the areas of three-tier intervention, differentiated assessment, data-driven instruction, classroom management, connecting to families and the community, team-teaching, the incorporation of literacy across all disciplines, the creation of PARCC-aligned formative and summative assessments, and the Common Core Standards/Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks.

Keeping Informed: Recent Townsend Educational News

  • North Middlesex's Music Program Full of Honors - The school year has been highly successful for North Middlesex's music program, with both middle schools' concert bands, the Hawthorne Brook Wind Ensemble and Symphony, and the high school's Winter Guard and Percussion earning medals. The Wind Ensemble, after earning gold, may have a chance to perform at the prestigious Symphony Hall. Although the district's middle schools have always had an accomplished music program, the high school just reached that level eight years ago, when Jason Bielik was hired.
  • Students Spend Day Off Volunteering - Even though North Middlesex Regional High had Martin Luther King Day off, over 100 students in the service learning club NOLA spent the day volunteering. The volunteers were involved in various activities, including making 50 thick fleece blankets for homeless veterans and a women's shelter, putting together 100 "patient [activity] packs" for hospitalized children, putting together 250 cold lunch bags for the hungry, baking peanut butter and applesauce cookies for dogs at the Lowell Humane Society, preparing feminine hygiene kits for young women in developing countries, and more.
  • Four Students Meet the Novel Challenge - North Middlesex Region High's librarian challenged interested students to write a novel in 30 days or less during National Novel Writing Month. This was a very difficult task, as this highly time-consuming process had to be done completely outside of students' classes. While writing, the four successful students faced such challenges as time, doing too much editing, and writer's block. Their librarian hopes to get their works published by Kindle.

Chalk Talk: Science Elective Courses

High schools are beginning to offer more and more elective courses in the sciences. One of the most popular is astronomy, which is the study of space, including stars and constellations, galaxies, planets, asteroids, comets, etc. Anatomy is another common class; it is the study of the human body. More specialized sciences include oceanography, botany, and geology. Oceanography is the study of the ocean and marine life, while geology focuses on the Earth, its composition, and the physical and chemical changes it is has undergone. With gardens in schools and an emphasis on fresh and organic produce becoming growing trends, botany is now also being offered in schools. It is great to see schools providing more choices for students in science. This variety is particularly important when it comes to getting girls interested in science.
