Chalk Talk: Junior High or Middle School?

The terms junior high and middle school are often mixed up. There are areas where they are very different, though. Junior high generally focuses on the subject, not the student. Because of this the junior high school will often organize teachers into subject areas and offer only academic classes and study halls. Middle schools however place teachers into teams that mix the subjects. This allows for flexible scheduling, exploratory or nonacademic classes, places the classes close together and offer teacher to student times throughout the day. The schools use different structures to introduce different approaches to establishing the best learning environment for the students. The junior high designation is important for students, however, who are ready to mature into a more rigorous environment.
