Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Trumbull District Curriculum

The Core Standards are designed to increase literacy in reading and writing starting in kindergarten and continuing through to graduation. In reading, students should be able to read and understand complex text aimed at readying students for college level curriculum. This is coupled with the development of writing skills that are essential not only in college but in the workforce as well. These skills build into better speaking and listening ability as well.

The same fundamental skills apply to the curriculum in Math and Science. Having literacy in the scientific thought process builds a foundation for complex analytical skills in high-level learning. In Math, the emphasis is on truly allowing students to have a strong understanding of mathematic skills by covering the same strands at each grade level so that each topic may be studied in depth. With all subject, each year is built upon the previous year. Trumbull also has a strong curriculum in foreign languages, history, technology, and the fine arts.

Chalk Talk: Getting Healthy in Schools

Many school districts across the country have made strides in attempting to get their student population to eat more healthily. One of the first steps most took was removing vending machines and only allowing water, juice or milk instead of sugary sodas. Of course some school districts have available more funds than others, but funding to provide more healthy menus is essential for the health and future our nation. Salad bars and fresh ingredients and eliminating fried foods is simple and easy. Healthy food does not have to expensive and if school districts buy from local growers and farmers markets they can not only save money but support the local economy as well.
