Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Turpin Hills District Curriculum

The elementary-level English language arts curriculum helps prepare students to be effective readers of literary works. Teachers work with students to develop positive reading habits, such as asking relevant questions about their readings to determine things like the key ideas and details of the text. Students learn how to identify the essential events in a text, as well as the setting of those events. Character analysis is undertaken, with students learning how to correctly identify the narrator of a story. Learners also engage in asking questions such as who, what, when, where, and why.

Part of Turpin Hills’ high school math curriculum is a study of geometry. Students explore circles, learning how to identify the area of circles and arc lengths. Circular theorems are introduced, which students learn how to apply in order to solve problems. Volume formulas are part of the curriculum as well, as are measurement and dimension. The relationship between 2-D and 3-D objects is also explored. Learners gain an understanding of congruence, and work with planar transformations in order to prove geometric theorems.

Chalk Talk: Technology Safety

With more and more students bringing technology to school to use as a learning tool, school districts and parents need to take measures to ensure children are using technology in a safe manner. Especially with younger children, basic rules need to be established. For example, kids should avoid having drinks or food near their devices to ensure there are no accidents. Children also should be taught how to properly carry their devices to ensure they don’t accidently drop it and cause damage, such as a cracked screen. When at home, kids need to have boundaries for when they can and cannot use technology and what they can use their devices to do. Educational purposes, like homework, should take precedent over other activities, such as playing games. Parents also need to discuss safe practices when using the Internet, social media, or Internet-enabled apps to ensure their children’s private information remains private.
