Chalk Talk: The Importance of Studying History

History is much more than memorizing names and dates of people and events in the distant past. The study of history provides important context for the world in which we live today. History provides a framework in which students can categorize and classify how the world works and why it works in the manner that it does. As we become an increasingly globalized society, the study of other peoples, cultures, and traditions becomes extremely important. Developing respect for disparate peoples is important not just for the workplace but also for a successful personal life in the 21st century. History helps students develop a level of discernment as well. By studying the mistakes of the past, students learn the difference between right and wrong, how to empathize with others, and how to overcome adversity. In that regard, an in-depth study of history can inspire young people to make better decisions for themselves that will positively impact their communities as well.
