Chalk Talk: No More Grade Levels?

Some school districts have adopted a new approach to education and done away with traditional grade levels. Rather than basing education on a child’s age, these new approaches, most of which are competency-based, instead structure courses on each individual child’s proficiency. The result is that classes are much more homogeneous in terms of student ability. Although there may be greater diversity in terms of kids’ ages, they are much more similar concerning what they know and what they can do academically. This type of set up is much more concerned with the actual outcome of learning, rather than the time put into learning, as is the case in a more traditional system of education. Competency-based systems allow advanced students to accelerate their learning, while also giving struggling students the time they need to catch up. Additionally, this type of educational system allows for movement in subjects independent of others, so a student who is good in math can move through the curriculum quickly, while taking his or her time in a subject in which they struggle.
