Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Uniontown District Curriculum

In Language Arts, critical thinking skills such as analysis, interpretation and evaluation of text sources as significant goals of the curriculum. Students should be able to distinguish between their own point of view and the author’s point of view in the early grades, and then extend it to comparing two or more accounts of the same event, noting similarities and differences between them. Research skills are also taught and students are expected to develop writing abilities in tandem with all these activities.

By high school, students develop skills in language and literature to a high degree. They begin focusing on their senior project in their freshman year, studying interests and beginning research on different topics. Programs in art integrate reading, writing, and math into production. For example, students working in advanced art classes use independent contracts to demonstrate their understanding of form and color in a chosen medium. Besides producing art works, they may research and write reports about how media are used.

Chalk Talk: Integrating Arts with Core Subject Learning

Math, Science, and English can be integrated into the arts and music in a number of innovative ways. For example, the relationships within notes in a musical scale have their roots in geometric proportions, and acoustics, physics, and biology determine how sounds are produced and how they are heard. This can help students understand many elements of math. Color has chemical and physical properties, and wavelengths determine what colors we see, which students learn about in science. In addition, the lives and work of composers, musicians, and artists are an interesting and rewarding field of historical study.
