Educating Our Parents: Understanding the University Park District Curriculum

Reading is part of the Language Arts department at University Park Schools. When they begin to read students read picture books either as a teacher reads out-loud, in a small group or by themselves. The books become simple chapter books or books that are used to demonstrate a specific trait. They use books like “Tuck Everlasting” to help students understand the importance of setting and the author’s voice. By the time they graduate, students will have read works by Shakespeare to understand a specific time in literary history.

University Park Schools begin the study of biology as the grade school level. Students begin by looking at the exterior of a plant as they learn the different parts. They then go on to look at a closer viewpoint to see how the root grows into smaller sections and even have hairs that help it stay anchored. When they study biology at the high school level, they find out about the cells that are within each of these structures and their roles in keeping the plant alive.

Chalk Talk: School Counselors

School counselors help parents and students in many different ways. The difficulty is when to ask these busy people for help or advice. If there is a problem that a child faces at school, call the counselor to talk with them privately. When making the appointment make sure that the counselor knows how important the issue is, so they can make sure to prioritize all of the issues they need to deal with in a day. Also, make sure that big moves are not made until these professionals and parents have a meeting. Do not automatically move a child to a different school due to a bullying problem or other issue without seeing what other options are available from the counselor. If after meeting with them, the steps to resolve the issues are not laid out, then see about talking with the administration. This profession is often a middle person, which causes the limitations they face. They are usually caring people which only want what is best for all parties involved in an issue.
