Upland District and Curriculum

The Upland schools use an enhanced model of curricular design in which the standards for learning are detailed with precision and can serve as the basis of instruction and assessment. Each subject is designed to impart the essential knowledge within the subjects and to do so in such a way that subject-area skills and strategies are developed yearly and built upon in following years.

In Mathematics, the content areas of numeracy, measurement, algebraic and geometric functions, and advanced topics like Discrete Math are the linear progression that students follow. Skill sets are developed yearly in all the basic forms of math and students are prepared to handle the complex topics within the subject at the high school level.

Similarly, in Science students are taught about the skills of being a scientist and the knowledge that has been developed in fields like biology, earth and environment, physics, and chemistry. The foundation continues to grow so that students are prepared to take on classes in fields such as engineering and information technology in high school.

We currently cover the following Upland-area school district: Upland Unified School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Upland District Curriculum

In English/Language Arts, communication is the central curricular focus. Reading strategies for non-fiction and literary texts are taught and writing strategies that target different goals for written expression and different tastes of an audience are focused on each year. This is accomplished by also providing a foundation in skills to develop vocabulary and by conveying an understanding of the grammatical structure of the language. The frameworks provide an all-encompassing educational experience to students and one in which critical skills developed are always able to inform future academic challenges.

In Language Arts, students learn about how to read literary and informational texts, write for a range of purposes, use a writing process, and to listen and speak with critical thinking skills. This broad framework for all subjects prepares students for the next steps in their education.
