Chalk Talk: How to Choose Your High School Classes

While it may seem obvious what classes you want to take in high school, some things can be confusing, like what electives and in what order classes should be taken. With so many course offerings and so many requirements, how do you decide whether to focus on getting into Honors classes, taking that extra year of math, or going one level up for an AP class, or even choosing to take a college course? With so many questions and options, it is important to ask your school guidance counselors for information to make sure your decisions are doable and will allow you to graduate on time. While it is not always necessary to take the hardest classes, some Honors and advanced classes, as well as college courses, may benefit you in the future. You may be recognized for more scholarships or these classes may eventually prepare you or qualify you to take courses that will be crucial in your career path. While thinking about such courses, make sure that you calculate your work load and what you can handle as well. Remember, if English is your thing, maybe you can focus on that while you take regular math, or vise versa.
