Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Upper Township District Curriculum

The Upper Township School District and the Ocean City School District both develop curricula according to the guidelines established by the Common Core State Standards and the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. The benchmarks for student learning established in these documents ensure that all students, regardless of where they attend school, receive standardized instruction and assessment in a number of content areas. As a result, the education students receive is research-based, comprehensive in nature.

As part of the social studies curriculum, all students learn about the development of other nations and peoples. Students learn about early civilizations in the Fertile Crescent. Students analyze the impact that geography had on the development of early cities, and explain the necessity of building cities near large bodies of water. An examination of early laws is undertaken, as in an analysis of how early laws favored men and the wealthy. Students also examine early systems of writing and explain the long-term impact written records.

Chalk Talk: Why Study History?

The reasons for studying history can often be lost on young learners. Learning about how people lived centuries ago might not seem relevant to today. However, when done right, history provides a clear understanding of the interrelatedness of peoples across time. By looking at the big picture, students can understand how the actions of people in the past continue to have influence today. And in turn, how the actions of people today will have influence in the future. History helps us learn more about other peoples, cultures and places. It inspires us by teaching us about great people and great moments in history, and advises us what not to do by examining the mistakes of the past. History, then, provides students with a blueprint for discernment, good decision-making and understanding.
