Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Urbana District Curriculum

The English language arts curriculum in Urbana is integrated with the social studies curriculum so that students develop appropriate literacy skills for the social studies. In middle school, students examine primary and secondary sources and learn how to cite textual evidence to support their analysis of those documents. Students also learn how to explain a text’s description of a historical process, such as how a bill becomes law. In high school, learners work on developing an ability to determine a word or phrase’s meaning by using the context in which it appears.

The Urbana arts curriculum offers students the opportunity to study dance, drama, visual arts, and music. Elementary school music students acquire the basic music skills needed to form a foundation for future musical studies. Beat, rhythm, tempo, and pitch are among the first concepts students study. They also explore various instruments, including those made with metal or wood. Various genres of music are presented to students in order to demonstrate different sounds, beats, and feelings that music can evoke.

Chalk Talk: Art Is Good for the Brain

Much research has been conducted on the positive impacts that participation in the arts has on student achievement. Studies show that high school students with more arts credits perform better on the ACT on measures of reading comprehension and mathematical computation. Children in California that participated in a unique arts program improved their reading test scores by an average of 87 points. There is a strong correlation between studying music and improved geometric reasoning abilities as well. Across the board, students that take part in arts classes have improved attention, better persistence in light of adversity, and more engagement with the subject under study. Creativity is another attribute that arts students boast. Whether its music, drama, or pottery, studying art makes for a better student and a more engaged brain.
