Valley East District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs
The districts of Valley East use the Ontario Curriculum which provides a comprehensive plan for elementary and secondary education and associated programs. For students who require accelerated or special education services, the curriculum details the types of supports students are offered and provides a plan by which all students are able to master grade-level expectations. The core subjects of Math and Science are framed similarly in the curriculum. Students learn fundamentals and processes that prepare them for the expectations of the secondary curriculum.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Valley East District Curriculum
In English, students are taught the fundamentals of literacy, writing, and oral communication during the elementary years. Students also have units in media studies which help them become critical thinkers about the media and expands their overall analytic and interpretative abilities. In English, both fiction and non-fiction is used to help students develop an appreciation of literature, its craft, and the points of view it puts forth. Students develop writing skills by performing written reflections and analysis of the ideas and texts they connect with.
With a basis of literacy, problem-solving and various modes of communication, students are able to use these abilities to take on courses of study which will prepare them for their future. The secondary schools offer a host of options in international language learning, technological learning, outdoor and environmental learning, and students are also able to pursue independent studies and community service that combine subjects of interest.

Keeping Informed: Recent Valley East Educational News
- Barrydowne College - Barrydowne College is an alternative educational option that has two programs serving students ages 14-16 and ages 17-20. The program is run in partnership with Cambrian College and has evolved to serve the needs of students who learn more succesfully in small learning envronments. The program offers students significant academic opportunities and helps students plan for their next steps.
- Learning and Technology - The Sudbury Catholic School District is working on a number of projects to increase the amount of technology available to students to enhance their learning. The kindergartens are providing students with iPads, the elementary and middle school students are learning and working on projects with laptops, and all schools are increasing their assistive technology resources.
- Research Findings for Parents - The University of Toronto puts out a regular publication for parents on research that has interesting or useful implications about learning. This publication is a useful resource for educators and community groups also so that they may use this sort of information for planning the educational initiatives occurring in the schools.

Chalk Talk: College Essay Tips
It is easy to become overwhelmed when faced with the college essays. Here are some tips to help fight this feeling and do well. First of all, tell what is important to you, in a language which you want to use. Put the thesaurus aside and write from the heart and head. Next, remember who you are writing to. Stay away from the abbreviations that are used in texting and emails. Another idea is to have someone else read over your essay. They will be able to catch grammar and spelling issues that you may miss. Finally, be yourself. Be confident and don’t be afraid to wander off a little. At times these are the times when the writer are the most honest, confident, and well-written. Take a deep breath, relax and begin.
