Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Valley East District Curriculum
In English, students are taught the fundamentals of literacy, writing, and oral communication during the elementary years. Students also have units in media studies which help them become critical thinkers about the media and expands their overall analytic and interpretative abilities. In English, both fiction and non-fiction is used to help students develop an appreciation of literature, its craft, and the points of view it puts forth. Students develop writing skills by performing written reflections and analysis of the ideas and texts they connect with.
With a basis of literacy, problem-solving and various modes of communication, students are able to use these abilities to take on courses of study which will prepare them for their future. The secondary schools offer a host of options in international language learning, technological learning, outdoor and environmental learning, and students are also able to pursue independent studies and community service that combine subjects of interest.

Chalk Talk: College Essay Tips
It is easy to become overwhelmed when faced with the college essays. Here are some tips to help fight this feeling and do well. First of all, tell what is important to you, in a language which you want to use. Put the thesaurus aside and write from the heart and head. Next, remember who you are writing to. Stay away from the abbreviations that are used in texting and emails. Another idea is to have someone else read over your essay. They will be able to catch grammar and spelling issues that you may miss. Finally, be yourself. Be confident and don’t be afraid to wander off a little. At times these are the times when the writer are the most honest, confident, and well-written. Take a deep breath, relax and begin.
