Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Van Wert District Curriculum

The social studies curriculum in Van Wert begins in elementary school where children learn about the various facets that comprise social studies. Students learn how to investigate historical events and organize that information utilizing historical tools such as timelines. Learners examine both primary and secondary sources to develop an understanding of how communities form, and explore how those communities have changed over time. Students use maps to identify the characteristics of the environment that influence the development of civilizations.

High school students in Van Wert are able to learn a second language as part of the district’s world languages curriculum. The curriculum is organized into three strands. On the interpersonal level, students work on developing an understanding of the written and spoken aspects of language. This is accomplished through various activities, including one-on-one conversations and letter writing exercises in which students utilize appropriate parts of language to convey their message.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Math Skills

Math is clearly an important component of the K-12 public school curriculum. However, some students question why they need to learn math, arguing that it isn’t something they will use in their everyday lives. However, math is in fact a very important part of day-to-day living. First, math skills are required in order to calculate a tip for services such as eating dinner at a restaurant. Being able to estimate an appropriate amount by examining the check total is a basic skill. Second, math skills include the ability to foresee long-term consequences. This could be applied to finding the quickest route to a destination, determining which stocks will perform the best, or deciding how much interest will be paid on a loan over the long-term. Lastly, basic math skills can help people live a healthier life. Being able to count calories or determine the daily value of fats or cholesterol might help in making healthier decisions, which cannot be done without math skills.
