Ventura District and Curriculum
The curriculum used in Ventura’s schools is a standards-based curriculum that describes what students are expected to know in the subject areas. The objectives within the curriculum detail the skills that students are expected to master and upon which statewide assessments are aligned.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Ventura District Curriculum
In English/Language Arts the Common Core Standards is the curricular framework which describe what skills go into reading informational texts, developing a writing process and other communication skills. In Math, the Common Core Standards provides descriptions of what students need to be able to do in the areas of numerical operations, algebraic functions, geometry and measurement, and data analysis. In the Sciences, the framework covers the topics of earth science, biology, chemistry, physics, environmental science and technology.
Schools also have program offerings like International Baccalaureate (IB) or other Choice Programs. These programs also have curriculum that state the learning objectives of the courses and these learning objectives offer measurable goals for students to achieve.

Keeping Informed: Recent Ventura Educational News
- Open Classroom - There is one school in the district that offers an open classroom environment for student learning. This is one of the schools of choice and it is designed to promote openness in community through students K-8 education.
- Extracurriculars - The high schools offer a wide-ranging selection of activities students can participate in after school. Many of the traditional clubs - like Mock Trial and Debate, Key Club, Academic Decathalon, and others - have long-served to increase academic achievement. All these and many other innovative clubs are available at all Ventura's high schools.
- Model Independent High School Award - The El Camino High School at Ventura College is a Model Independent School that has recently received an award from the state of California recognizing the excellent academic accomplishments of the school commuity. This school offers students the chance to complete independent studies as they progress through their high school years.
