Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Vermilion District Curriculum

The Social Studies curriculum explores the founding of the United States. The period of expansionism during the first half of the 1800s is explored as well. Students are introduced to the nation’s efforts to acquire more territory, including the Louisiana Purchase, and learn about the government’s efforts to explore this new territory with the purpose of expanding the nation westward to the Pacific Ocean.

Vermilion’s science curriculum culminates with the study of physics in high school. Various concepts are studied in physics, including the principles of motion. Learners acquire an understanding of position vs. time, velocity vs. time, and acceleration vs. time. Horizontal and vertical motion is also studied, particularly with regard to projectiles. Students utilize graphs to solve problems related to motion, such as calculating instantaneous and average velocities. Physics students examine energy as well. Learners explore gravitational energy and nuclear energy, and identify the means by which energy can be conserved.

Chalk Talk: Preparing for Middle School

Beginning middle school can be trying for most children. There are ways that parents can help make this transition easier. Primarily, communication needs to be open between the child and the parent. Next, try to arrange a visit to the new school. This allows the child to become familiar with the lockers, the location of the lunch room, the gym and the classrooms. At this same time, see if a meeting can be made with the new teacher. Talk with the child about the concerns they have about entering this new phase of education, but also help them to see the ways that they will be able to grow and excel in this new time. Finally, make sure that the child is prepared for the first day of school by taking them out for a school supply shopping trip.
