Vernon District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs
The curriculum used in the schools of Vernon has been developed by the Ministry of Education as a tool to provide standards of learning for instructors to teach and students to learn. These standards represent the essential knowledge that will bring about proficiency in the subject matter for students. The curriculum refers to these standards as Prescribed Learning Outcomes (PLOs) as they are the outcomes necessary to create the appropriate knowledge base. Other specialized programs like Environmental Education and Cooperative Education also have curriculum that pinpoint what students are expected to master in their pursuit of learning and career goals.
We currently cover the following Vernon-area school districts: School District 22, St. James School.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Vernon District Curriculum
The study of languages is an important part of the curriculum and students can partake in this subject in elementary through high school either in an immersion model or through language courses. Language learning begins with vocabulary and grammar but quickly moves students into more authentic language experiences such as speaking and reading. Students gain the ability to read a second language with proficiency, and also develop the skills to be effective listeners.
The science curriculum allows students to explore advanced concepts in preparation for college level coursework in the subject. Wavelength, velocity, amplitude, and frequency are all concepts that students must master as part of their study of physics. They also examine waves and how they are propagated and transmit energy. In chemistry, a comparison of the properties of groups of elements on the Periodic Table is undertaken as well. Students also utilize particle models to differentiate between the properties of solids, liquids, and gasses. They work with solutions as well, identifying acids, bases, and neutral pH.

Chalk Talk: Considerations for Advanced Placement Courses
Over 60 percent of high schools offer Advanced Placement (AP) courses in over 22 subjects. AP coursework provides students with the rigor of college, while giving students an opportunity to receive college credit for an excellent test score. If students attend a school that does not offer AP classes, they can still take the test, possibly earning themselves money- and time-saving credits. But are AP courses for all students who plan to attend college? It depends on the student’s commitment, time, and interests. First, every exam costs $85. It’s unfortunate that money may get in the way of someone’s dreams, but it is a reality. However, $85 does typically beat the cost of a college course. It is also important to decide whether the college(s) you want to go to strongly advises a rigorous load.
