Vernon District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs
The Vernon Independent School District uses the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills curriculum framework to guide teaching and learning. This is a standards-based curriculum that builds student knowledge in all key topics of a subject in a scaffolded fashion. The district emphasizes core academics and the development of literacy, mathematic and scientific knowledge starting in elementary school. Throughout middle and high school, students have options that allow them to accelerate or specialize their academic focus. These programs, combined with the academic services in the district, give students many opportunities to learn, grow, and develop.
We currently cover the following Vernon-area school district: Vernon Independent School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Vernon District Curriculum
In elementary school, there is a strong focus on reading, writing, mathematical problem-solving, and discovering the basics of science. The reading curriculum requires even elementary students to respond critically to texts they read with their thoughts, reactions, and questions. Beyond core academics, the whole child is education. As part of the elementary arts curriculum, students learn how to respond to various types of art and critique them as well. The physical education curriculum in which students participate is designed to provide students with insight into practices that will help them maintain their health.
In high school, learning expectations become more specialized and complex in each subject. For instance, in Chemistry, students explain chemical processes in the context of the relationship between heat, motion, and the arrangement of particles in various substances. Students also gain the ability to determine the molar mass of a compound by examining its chemical formula and atomic mass. Additionally, all aspects of scientific literacy from reading scientific content to providing a written description of lab results are emphasized.

Chalk Talk: Math and Science at Home
Math and Science naturally work together and as a child enters middle school, this becomes obvious. Both subjects demonstrate problem-solving skills for children. Some of the tools they acquire are observation, comparison, measurement, systems and classification. Parents can help build skills in both areas by pointing out the math and science that are used in everyday activities. Experiencing nature is another way to help a student to gain interest and understanding of science. Children can learn about ecosystems and different environmental factors. Cooking is a good example as it involves measurement, fractions, mixtures and changing characteristics of the food being cooked. By looking for, and pointing out, how these topics help each other the child will discover the relativity of each subject.
