Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Verona District Curriculum
The curriculum is research-based and is built on the foundation of the standards set forth in the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards and the Common Core State Standards. These documents outline what students should learn at each grade level in the following subject areas: science, technology, 21st Century life and careers, visual and performing arts, health and physical education, social studies, world languages, language arts and math.
Learning about community responsibility begins in elementary school, where kids participate in classroom exercises that teach leadership, responsibility and collaboration. In middle school, students examine laws and why they are necessary. They also learn about how the American government is structured and how it depends on the participation of citizens in order to work properly. In high school, students acquire advanced knowledge of democratic functioning, with an examination of seminal documents such as the Constitution and Bill of Rights, analysis of landmark Supreme Court cases and participation in service learning and community service projects.

Chalk Talk: Benefits of Vocational Training
Today’s highly technological and highly competitive workplace requires workers to have the latest training and education. For many workers, this means attending a vocational or career school. Yet, some students, parents and teachers dismiss the value of a strong vocational education. Since everything students in vocational courses learn is directly applicable to their career of choice, students tend to be more engaged and enjoy their learning on a deeper level. Additionally, vocational education provides hands-on experience and develops practical skills that can be immediately put to use on the job. As such, graduates from vocational programs have a far easier time finding a post-graduation job than do their peers who attend a four-year college. Vocational programs can be completed in far less time as well, meaning graduates not only have a better chance of getting a job, they do so in a shorter amount of time.
