During these grades, learning occurs through collaborative work and active participation, and student individual learning needs are a focus.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Villa Rica District Curriculum
Middle grades focus on the transition between middle and high school years, addressing the concerns and interests of students at this phase of their life. Through Connections, an exploratory approach to learning, students are taught subject areas integrated within each other; an interdisciplinary curriculum that provides opportunities for continued academic and personal development.
The high school years are focused on preparing students for college and the workforce. Curriculum emphasizes critical thinking skills and increased knowledge. Students are expected to produce a great deal of analytic writing, applying to all subjects and develop strong academic research skills. They are expected to learn how to incorporate the thoughts of others into their own work. Students are provided with opportunities for academic and extracurricular growth as well as personal development.

Chalk Talk: Sight Word
The primary grades are not only the introduction of classroom learning for some children but also the mastering of foundational skills that need to be carried through their schooling. Phonics and sight words are the basis for reading during these grades. Being able to sound out words and memorize words may not be easy for some and confusing for others. Testing of these skills, which occurs at each of the primary grade levels (K, 1st and 2nd), can make demonstrating one’s reading ability even more of a challenge. Resources and lists of the most common sight words can be found from teachers, school districts and other educational resources. During these grades and age levels, memorization and sounding out can be the most helpful means of mastering words. Just a few words a day can make a difference to your child’s learning. During conversation, when watching television or playing games, add a sight word into the moment. These moments can make a difference in your child’s learning progression.
