Ville Platte District and Curriculum

The public schools in the city of Ville Platte are part of the Evangeline Parish School District. The district has set as its mission to provide an educational environment that students learn and are challenged so that they can reach their full potential. Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Ville Platte District Curriculum

The Evangeline Parish School District has implemented the Common Core Curriculum that was approved for use in all public schools in the state of Louisiana. Common Core helps prepare students for college or other post high school education and for the workforce. The goal is to provide students with the skills they need to be successful particularly in the areas of communication, reading and math. In Mathematics, core math subjects are emphasized including computational skills, algebra, geometry, and proportional reasoning.

In English and Language Arts (ELA), the focus is on learning to read, write, speak and listen in correct English. Students are provided with a variety of reading materials including informational text and literature so they are prepared for the types of reading they may encounter on the job. In writing, students learn how to write and communicate using good grammar in both formal and informal communications.

Keeping Informed: Recent Ville Platte Educational News

  • Teachers of the Year - The Evangeline Parish School District recently name the Teachers of the Year for the parish. Chenile Tezeno from Bayou Chicot Elementary won Elementary Teacher of the Year, Kelly Bellard of Ville Platte High School won Junior High School Teacher of the Year and Mindy Janot of Basile High School took the award of High School Teacher of the Year.
  • Annual 4-H Awards - The 4-H Club of the Evangeline Parish recently held their 12th annual banquet and awards dinner at the Northside Civic Center. Awards given out included scholarship awards, Award of Excellence Winners, Outdoor Skills Awards, State Seafood Ambassador Awards, Record of Excellence Award, and the Outstanding 4-H member award. In addition 4-H staff members were also recognized at the event.
  • Open House for High School Students - The South Louisiana Community College (SLCC) recently welcomed high school students from the high schools in the Evangeline Parish School District for an open house and lunch. Dr. Shania Riser provided a presentation for the students and there were also classroom presentations in the areas of automotive, welding, and nursing so that students could get an idea of the college courses.

Chalk Talk: Do Write for Teens

Teens now have a website where they can submit their creative writing, art, or digital media at the Do Write site created by teenager Madeleine Lippey. The mission of the site is to provide a online community for teens that helps foster creativity, writing, idea generation and an exchange of ideas. The site has a gallery of teen artwork and creative submissions. Topics of discussion include poverty, domestic violence, public health, education in the young community on a worldwide basis. The emphasis in on using ones voice to create “fearless” artistic contributions that can be shared with other teens to help build awareness over world issues. The goal is to improve understanding, tolerance, and empathy for others and to help create solutions to problems that teens are dealing with on a global scale. Currently there are over 19,000 members from over 32 countries involved in the organization. There are also Do Write chapters in partnership with schools, women's organizations and other organizations.
