Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Voorhees Township District Curriculum

Both the Voorhees Township Public Schools and the Eastern Camden County Regional High School District develop curricula based on the Common Core State Standards and the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. These two documents provide guidance for what students should learn and know at each grade level. The Common Core Standards outline math and language arts standards, while the New Jersey Core standards govern learning objectives and benchmarks for all other subject matter.

Part of the well-rounded education students receive is sound instruction in the physical sciences. In elementary school, students learn the properties of solids, liquids and gasses, and learn to differentiate between them. Students in middle school build on this basic knowledge to engage in activities that require them to calculate an object’s volume and density. As high schoolers, students use atomic models to predict the behavior of atoms, explain the properties of isotopes and learn about how solutes dissolve in solvents.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Written Communication

Being a good writer isn’t something that only applies in English class. Being a good writer means having the ability to utilize grammar, punctuation, sentence structure and idea development to organize your thoughts in an engaging and informative manner. Having a good grasp of the components of good writing allows you to present yourself well on resumes, job applications and applications for scholarships or to colleges. Being able to put your best self forward in written form can make or break future plans. A resume fraught with spelling errors will not help you land the job you covet. A scholarship or college application with an abundance of grammatical errors will end up in the trash bin. Although writing well isn’t part of the everyday world of tweeting and texting, it is nevertheless an important component of achieving one’s academic and career goals.
