Waco Independent School District uses Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills as the basis for their curriculum to help prepare students for an ever-changing world. This is a progressive curriculum which uses a series of objectives to detail what students should achieve each year in all core subjects. Learning is further integrated with the extracurriculars available at each school. The extracurricular activities are based in popular areas like the arts, the pursuit of professional interests, and academic competition and allow students to make choices about the areas they would like to pursue and become more involved with.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Waco District Curriculum

The social studies curriculum reaches out to students by introducing them to community leaders that they are most familiar with. This includes the teacher, principal and parents. Soon, students learn about the leaders of their community and state, as well as the path that was taken to place these leaders in their roles. They also learn about the laws of the area and the state, in addition they learn about the leaders that make up the United States.

The mathematics curriculum includes a strand on geometry. Students learn how to recognize a variety of shapes, like squares, circles and triangles, by looking for these shapes throughout their world, the desk may be square, the clock a circle. Then they learn how to use these shapes to create artwork of their own. This knowledge is built upon by learning additional shapes throughout their education. Students also learn how to measure shapes, both the exterior and interior measurements and how to create shapes with certain measurements.

Chalk Talk: Seventh-Grade Social Studies

By seventh grade, students have one year of middle school under their belt, but this does not mean that these students will have smooth sailing. In seventh grade, in Texas, social studies focuses on the history of Texas beginning with the first Native Americans through the leaders found in today's history. Students learn about major milestones and people who have brought about the changes seen in this state's past. Parents can help students by keeping communication open and helping the student stay on top of their homework and independent projects.
