Wainfleet District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The academic experience in Wainfleet is guided by the Ontario Curriculum which is a broadly designed curriculum encompassing all subjects and grade level expectations for learning. The model for learning was developed in the traditional subjects and the layout is to teach students the fundamentals of a subject, develop their experiences with the material, and then apply that knowledge to higher-order learning. The curriculum is designed to build from a base of core knowledge and move students towards the ability to understand complex topics, concepts and theories essential to the different academic subjects.

We currently cover the following Wainfleet-area school districts: Niagara Catholic District School Board and District School Board of Niagara.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Wainfleet District Curriculum

The subjects of Math, Science, English, and History all help shape students' understanding of the world and find their interests within it. The curriculum provides opportunities for exploring subjects ranging from agricultural sciences to zoology. Programs devoted to bilingual development, arts education, and engineering account for some of the many opportunities students may pursue during their school years. Many schools also offer international education opportunities including study abroad.

The process drawn out for learning is thorough and the curriculum places high expectations on students. This is done because beyond the goal of teaching students the basics of Math, Science, and English, the goal of developing critical thinkers who are capable of performing complex work is central to the curricular design. The learning objectives are designed so that students are ready for future academic and professional endeavors.

Chalk Talk: Tips to Improve Students' Writing

Writing has become a key component of instruction, learning and formal assessments. It is believed that writing is an advanced form of thinking and that through the use of reflection and analysis, writers are capable of extending their thoughts. Some general, but important tips to help students develop effective writing skills are: 1) re-read essays after writing them to see where more can be added, or something might be omitted, 2) look for sentences or paragraphs where the question "Why do you think this?" or "Where does this information come from?" might apply, 3) ask for feedback from a trusted friend, teacher, or parent and revise accordingly.
