Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Wanaque District Curriculum

Both the Wanaque and Lakeland Regional school districts have developed comprehensive curricula that focus on the acquisition of knowledge and skills that prepare students for life and work in the modern world. Students engage in challenging and relevant classroom learning, which is paired with field trips and other real world learning opportunities. By connecting what is learned at school with the outside world, students gain a deeper appreciation for what they learn.

A key part of the language arts curriculum is learning how to read literature. The elementary curriculum focuses student learning on asking appropriate questions regarding a text, and learning how to answer questions through critical reading. In middle school, students acquire the ability to compare and contrast writing styles and analyze how their structure helps the author’s ability to convey their story. The high school curriculum introduces students to from the Eighteenth, Nineteenth and early Twentieth Centuries, which they examine for similar themes and topics.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Public Speaking

Having effective public speaking skills is a necessity for the vast majority of modern careers. Whether its explaining how to complete a task to a small group of employees or delivering a quarterly report to a roomful of executives, being able to articulate thoughts in a coherent and engaging fashion is a vital skill to have. To prepare themselves, students can take any number of courses in high school that will prepare them to speak in front of others, from drama and theater classes to language arts and foreign language classes. Practicing speaking in high school will help build self-confidence and allows students to get feedback on how to improve from their teachers and peers. Additionally, the more practice students get, the more comfortable they become both in front of small or large crowds.
