Warren District and Curriculum

The Warren Consolidated Schools always strive for excellence and it shows. Over half of their 25 schools are recognized as Blue Ribbon Exemplary Schools which means students are getting the best education possible. This school district also gives choice to parents. There are year round schooling options, a math and technology center, and magnet schools for the performing arts. Besides choice, another focus is on bringing in members of the community to contribute to students’ educational success.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Warren District Curriculum

The schools in this district all follow curriculum developed by the Michigan Department of Education. The English and Language Arts portion focuses on key elements of the language, including learning to decode words using phonics and phonemic awareness. There is also a focus on vocabulary and comprehension of authentic texts. As they grow, the curriculum exposes students to many literary genres including non-fiction.

The Mathematics curriculum focuses on five key areas in all grade levels. Altogether, these five areas teach students to think critically about the world around them and give them the skills they need to solve problems in a rapidly changing world. Laying the foundation for all future math learning, the content they learn follows a pattern through high school and into adult life. The five areas are data and probability, number operations, measurement, algebraic thinking, and geometry, focusing on practical and conceptual knowledge in all.

Chalk Talk: What Are Blue Ribbon Schools?

In 1982, the Department of Education created the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program to recognize high-achieving schools and those that have significantly closed the education gap between higher and lower income students. Schools receive the award by demonstrating above average test scores. In the program's thirty year history, over 5,000 have received this distinction. The criteria are very challenging and only a handful of schools have won it more than three times. A National Blue Ribbon Award shows everyone in that a school is working hard on behalf of its students.
