Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Warrensburg District Curriculum

The English/Language Arts curriculum is developed from the Common Core State Standards, a set of rigorous national standards that teach core literacy concepts, along with reading, writing, researching, speaking and listening skills. The curriculum prepares students for college, careers, and citizenship. Students work regularly with challenging text and academic vocabulary that help them develop key skills in decoding, interpretation, evaluation and analysis.

The Math curriculum is also developed from Common Core, and places an emphasis on the same eight mathematical practices throughout elementary, middle, and high school. Students learn core math concepts while incorporating problem solving and reasoning into daily learning activities. The science curriculum, framework of state science standards and Common Core Literacy Standards, combines disciplinary core ideas and technology to allow students to inquire and explore their world.

Chalk Talk: Is a College Degree Necessary?

The general answer: more often than not, yes. Begin your search for a definite answer by thinking about what your career will be. Do you want to design blueprints for buildings? A degree focusing on architecture may be necessary for what you really want to do. Do you want to be a cosmetologist? A degree may not pay off in this field. An easy way to find out if the job you are interested in requires a degree is to either ask someone in that field, or search for a job opening online or see if the qualifications for the job include a degree. Fourteen percent of people at Google don’t have a degree. Why not? They have spent hundreds of hours doing what they do well, and have proven they are good at it. Maybe a degree isn’t necessary, but is it beneficial? Search online to see if there is any indication of a degree equaling more pay.
