Chalk Talk: Academic Benefits of Music Education
Music is a subject area that brings students much enjoyment and opens them up to cultural and social experiences that they can’t get in other subjects. Music also helps with learning in a variety of ways from being an aid in studying to a basis for memorizing facts by song. Music education also offers opportunities for academic growth as well. In fact, the U.S. Department of Education lists music as one of the essential subject areas that college-bound students need to take. This is because music students demonstrate improved academic achievement, from higher standardized test scores to improved grades in class. Math scores, in particular, see positive growth as the time of study in music increases. Students who study music also earn higher scores on the SAT.
