Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Waseca District Curriculum
Geometry and measurement are two essential topics students explore as part of Waseca’s elementary math curriculum. Students develop an understanding of parallel and perpendicular lines, and use them to create a variety of geometric shapes. Various polygons are worked with as well, including hexagons, pentagons, and octagons. Learners also acquire the ability to use half units when making measurements, such as measuring the length of a section of rope to the nearest half-inch. Additional measurement concepts, such as surface area and perimeter, are studied as well.
The high school English language arts curriculum in Waseca focuses student learning on writing for different purposes. Students learn how to effectively write arguments that support their analysis of texts. Learners devise an understanding of how to introduce a topic, present their opinion, and support their opinion with valid sources. Explanatory writings are also explored. Learners hone their ability to explain a topic in appropriate detail, with supporting ideas that provide greater clarity to the overall topic.

Chalk Talk: Budget Tips for Test Preparation
With so many high-stakes tests on the table for public schoolchildren, the expense of purchasing study guides and other materials can really add up. However, there are numerous budget-friendly solutions for helping your child prepare for the SAT, ACT, and other exams. There are many online tools students can use for free to prepare for tests. A simple search for free resources garners many free study options. High school counseling offices often have free test prep booklets as well, as do many high school media centers. When it comes to last-minute preparations, make sure your child gets plenty of rest and a good breakfast before heading off to take their test. A good night’s sleep and a full stomach will help your child power through their test with plenty of energy.
