Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Waseca District Curriculum

Geometry and measurement are two essential topics students explore as part of Waseca’s elementary math curriculum. Students develop an understanding of parallel and perpendicular lines, and use them to create a variety of geometric shapes. Various polygons are worked with as well, including hexagons, pentagons, and octagons. Learners also acquire the ability to use half units when making measurements, such as measuring the length of a section of rope to the nearest half-inch. Additional measurement concepts, such as surface area and perimeter, are studied as well.

The high school English language arts curriculum in Waseca focuses student learning on writing for different purposes. Students learn how to effectively write arguments that support their analysis of texts. Learners devise an understanding of how to introduce a topic, present their opinion, and support their opinion with valid sources. Explanatory writings are also explored. Learners hone their ability to explain a topic in appropriate detail, with supporting ideas that provide greater clarity to the overall topic.

Keeping Informed: Recent Waseca Educational News

  • Program Connects STEM Students Across States - Fuze, an online communications tool, allows students in Waseca to work with students across the border in North Dakota to take part in STEM activities. The program allows students to see one another and speak to one another in real time. The collaborations are an important part of the 21st century learning goals.
  • Waseca Family Education Center Receives Literacy Grant - The Minnesota Reading Corps has given Waseca Family Education Center a grant to promote a third grade reading initiative. The grant will fund a tutoring position at the Education Center. Students in the elementary school will have more resources available to engage students with the joy of reading.
  • Community Gives Generously to District - First National Bank of Waseca recently made a substantial donation to the Waseca Bluejays Public School Endowment Fund. The endowment’s funding will be used to support educational programs and services throughout the district. The school community partnerships have proved to be a substantial means of support to local schools.
