Washington Court House District and Curriculum

Public school students in kindergarten through the twelfth grade attend the Washington Court House City Schools. The district was founded 200 years ago, and today has grown to include over 2,000 students who attend school in one of four recently constructed district school buildings. The mission of the district is to provide the academic, social, and emotional lessons children need in order to develop into citizens that are caring, confident, and make positive contributions to the community.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Washington Court House District Curriculum

The English language arts curriculum in Washington Court House is based on the premise of preparing students to be effective all-around communicators. The 6-12 curriculum focuses on skills related to speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Students take part in learning exercises that allow them to discern a speaker or author’s ideas. Students also learn how to determine meaning when reading by the context in which the information appears.

High school students in Washington Court House participate in a science curriculum that includes biology. Students survey a number of topics, including heredity, genetics, evolution, and cellular structure. Learners acquire an understanding of the processes underlying heredity, including the structure and function of DNA and the role that mutations play in changing the biological makeup of an organism. Students examine evolution as well, including genetic drift, gene flow, and natural selection. The structure of cells is studied, including the structure and function of cell structures.

Keeping Informed: Recent Washington Court House Educational News

  • High School Puts on Musical - Theater students at Washington High School recently completed their fall production. The students presented several performances of the 1980s movie Footloose and will continue performances of new shows throughout the year.
  • District Uses Waiver Days for Professional Development - Students will be dismissed from classes on four occasions throughout the school year for Waiver Days. These days will be used so faculty and staff members can participate in professional development activities.
  • Research Class Brings History to Life - Students at Washington HS have an opportunity to take a hands-on approach to learning history. The Research History course focuses on local history, including conducting interviews of local war veterans and examining the area’s role in the Underground Railroad.
