Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Washington District Curriculum

Washington High School utilizes the Missouri Learning Standards as an influence to its curriculum. Students are asked to read novels, short stories, and poetry, as well as more complex texts providing facts and background knowledge in areas such as science and social studies. Students are given guiding questions to answer that require them to refer back to what they have read and incorporate textual evidence into their answers. Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning so that they become life-long learners.

In all subjects, students must read for comprehension as well as evaluate intent and the success of the piece. They gather information which they then use to support their opinions as they write critical and responsive essays and give oral presentations. Their use of supporting evidence to back their claims is a face of all subjects and students are continually required to present their work process in class and on assessments.

Chalk Talk: What Is a Writing Center

Writing is a huge part of college. Students may be surprised at the number of writing assignments they’re given, but colleges also have resources available to help students with these assignments. Of course, the first resource is the instructor. Students should take questions and concerns to the source of the assignment. But sometimes they need more help. Writing Centers are a great solution. Students can bring in writing assignments at any stage of the process and receive feedback and guidance, regardless of the subject. There are also usually math-focused Centers to help struggling students in those areas. Because the Writing Center is sponsored by the college, staff members usually have experience with specific instructors, which can be of great help. There are often also tutors available through the Writing Center who can also be of great help for students.
