Washington District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The Washington County School District’s curriculum is based on the Utah Core Standards. Drawn from the Common Core State Standards, Utah’s Core is based on rigorous educational research that aims to make student’s college and career ready. The Common Core focuses on being able to solve problems in mathematics, to read, understand, and criticize a wide variety of informational and literary texts, and to be able to write effectively for different audiences.

We currently cover the following Washington-area school district: Washington County School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Washington District Curriculum

The curricular program is designed so that students approach problems holistically, rather than working on tasks in isolation. For example, in mathematics, students are shown the principles behind a problem, rather than a rote way to solve an equation set up a certain way. Manipulatives (physical objects to count and move) are used in the early grades, and visual representations of problems are an important learning tool, as are word problems.

Students exposure to Mathematics is integrated throughout the curriculum, with the basic elements of geometry, algebra, and statistics introduced in elementary school; students begin working with variables in sixth grade, for instance, and algebra and geometry are taught simultaneously in order to build connections between the fields. For advanced students, there is the opportunity to take an accelerated mathematics sequence which will terminate in taking Advanced Placement Calculus or Statistics in twelfth grade.

Chalk Talk: Choosing the Right Tutoring Program

When choosing a tutor, there are a lot of factors to think about. It’s important that a tutor understand the material that the student is working on—not just in the sense of being able to do the work, but being able to explain it to your child, in terms that match the way that the material is being covered in the classroom. Tutors need to understand your child’s learning style, so that they can match their lessons and speed to the way your student works. Finally, you need to be assured that you’ll be able to work with them over time, so that your student won’t have to start over from zero when they switch tutors or tutoring programs.
