Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Waverly District Curriculum

Waverly-Shell Rock students use iPads in every class to complete a wide variety of assignments. For example,
elementary school students learn to make iMovies and write ebooks, middle school students collaborate on interactive
presentations and high school students use the iPad to Skype with experts in their field of study to enhance their
educational experience. Teachers and instructors in the Waverly-Shell Rock Community schools also make the most of the available technology. Teachers are able to grade more effectively and communicate with parents and students. For example, if a student is absent, the student can find out what s/he missed so that they don’t fall behind.

Art students throughout the district are the beneficiaries of iPad use that allow them to complete art projects, store
photos in online accounts and create a digital portfolio. Physical education students can complete a circuit training

Chalk Talk: Tips for Developing Strong Literacy Habits

It’s common knowledge that children who read at home are more likely to develop strong reading habits and respond better to reading tasks in the classroom. But it’s equally important for parents to model a balance of fiction and non-fiction reading with their children. In fact, parents who can reflect a passion and respect for the information found in non-fiction reading, such as newspaper articles, magazines, and encyclopedias will have a much stronger influence on their child’s literacy skills than parents who focus on fiction reading alone. Good readers rely on a balance of reading materials and read to entertain themselves as well as learn new information. Start by finding out what topics already interest your child: astronomy, electronics, animals, or sports. Then, look for websites, books, and magazine or newspaper articles that provide more information on that topic in a child-friendly manner.
