Chalk Talk: The Importance of Inclusivity

Many schools across the nation are taking a proactive approach to making the school environment more inclusive. A large part of this inclusivity movement involves peer leadership and mentorship programs. These programs train student leaders to be mentors to both their peers and to younger students. These leaders learn how to facilitate small group discussions, teach team-building exercises and facilitate skills-development activities. With a focus on building rapport among students, these programs are finding much success in reducing bullying, gossiping and other negative behaviors by increasing the feeling of community in schools.
