Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Weehawken District Curriculum

The math and language arts curriculum in the Weehawken School District is built upon the foundation of the Common Core State Standards. The New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards provide similar guidance for what students should learn and know in the following seven subjects: world languages, the arts, health and physical education, 21st Century life and careers, technology, social studies and science.

The language arts curriculum includes lessons that help students acquire the skills they need to be excellent readers, writers, speakers and listeners. These skills are given practical application in the sciences and technical subjects. Students begin by acquiring an understanding of content specific terminology, such as vocabulary words related to scientific study. Students also learn how to identify key ideas and details in content-related texts, such as instructions in technical manuals. The ability to integrate textual knowledge with visual representations of information such as flow charts is also acquired, as is the ability to synthesize information from many different resources into a coherent understanding of the subject matter.

Chalk Talk: Getting More Out of Study Time

It can be difficult to get a child to focus on homework or studying for a test. However, there are a number of simple strategies parents can employ in order to help their child be more productive and focused during study time. First, be sure your child has adequate space to study. Providing them with room to spread out in a space that’s their own will help them get into the groove of completing their work. Second, limit the distractions. If you child has a mobile phone, have them shut it off. Also encourage other members of the family to be quiet and give your studying child the space they need to finish their studies. Lastly, make yourself available. Whether it’s bringing them a glass of water, quizzing them on vocabulary terms or helping them answer a question on their math homework, your presence in the room can help them stay on task.
