Weiser District and Curriculum

The Weiser School District provides a competitive, rigorous curriculum for its students, based on the Idaho state standards. Weiser High School also provides students with many opportunities for extracurricular opportunities, from clubs to sports, arts, and music. Students are expected to make smart choices, socially and in their own lives. The hope is that students will take charge of their own educations and become life-long learners who value learning for its own sake.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Weiser District Curriculum

In social studies classes, students read nonfiction and primary source texts, analyze them for meaning and intent, and gather evidence which they use to write analytic essays. In English classes, students read novels, short stories, poems, and essays, and gather evidence which they use to support their theses. Students are taught to dig below the surface and examine writing in deep, meaningful ways. Students are also exposed to technology so that they will be able to adapt and compete in our ever-advancing, technologically driven world.

Students are also encouraged to be involved in their community, both locally and globally. Well-rounded, engaged students are more likely to have success, not only academically, but in their lives and communities. Students also should become aware of the resources, such as library, media and technology services, which are available to them.

Chalk Talk: The Right Fit

The most important goal in the college search shouldn’t be landing an Ivy League college, or a Top-Ten College; it should be finding a college that is the right fit for the student, whether it’s a famous school or not. What is the Right Fit? This is a tough question to answer and requires a lot of time and effort to do so. First, the student needs to examine his/her learning needs and wants. Factors like class size, availability of instructors for extra help, support services, and majors offered (and the strength of those majors) are all essential. Graduation rates, internships, and job placement are also essential because they give insight into the effectiveness of the college’s programs. Cost is often the single, largest factor to consider. Location can be very important—not just that the college is in Florida and the student likes the beach, but if the location will work for the student’s needs.
